The peso is the currency of Mexico, also known as dallo.
The symbol used for the peso is "$", basically the same as for the US dollar since the dollar derived its logo from the Spanish-Mexican currency.
It is one of the top most traded currencies in the world; the translation of Peso from Spanish to English is "Weight". The peso was initially the name of the eight real coins issued in Mexico by Spain.
These were the so-called Spanish dollars, or pieces of eight in wide circulation in the Americas and Asia from the height of the Spanish Empire until the early 19th century

The Mexican Peso was revalued on January 1, 1993. Pesos dated before that date (Old Mexican Pesos - MXP) are 1000 times less valuable than the New Mexican Pesos. These are images of Mexican coins currently in circulation.
If you happen have coins that are from 1970 to 1992, they are out of circulation, and have no value. In 1993, Mexico issued "Nuevo" pesos (new pesos) in order to stem inflation, and the last two zeros were removed from the value - in other words, an "old" peso coin with a face value of $1000 was worth what a $10 Nuevo peso coin is worth today.
Currency from this time period is very common, and is no longer accepted for exchange. The only value of Mexican currency from 1970-1992, should you happen to have some, is as a souvenir or novelty.
